Screen-Shot-2013-05-31-at-3.59.46-PMThe Brief: To create outdoor spaces for 2 small internal courtyards for a stylish new double story abode located close to the Mindarie marina. The client wanted some decking and low maintenance plantings to green up the space. The client had a stone bowl to place and wanted to screen the neighboring double story building.

A feature wall was painted in Porter’s Pomodoro to match the colours in the beautiful Kimberly stone cladding used internally and externally. Decking was designed to provide courtyard access and edging to the garden beds and large enough to accommodate an alfresco dining area and seating. Simple plantings of Liriope, Lilly Pilly ‘Cascade’, and Cycads provided low maintenance greenery. Pebble mulch was used throughout.

A common problem with small building lots currently is the need to screen off a neighboring house limited by a tight space to work with. The options include fastigiate trees, those with an upright narrow form. These allow effective screening by planting close together for an instant effect without the need for a deep garden bed. In this project 3 narrow ornamental plums were used as screening plants for the foliage colour and the suitability of growing in a coastal location.
